Daydream from Mornings Ago
I called out from the loft-top in your apartment
and heard back the cars skid through rain and ice
on the avenue below
Pictured them, the people with “things to do” and I
half-naked while you’re at work
content to do nothing at all,
not even to close my eyes and sleep
To want only this—
to wake up and feel the heartbeat heavy
from chosen exhaustion
Eyelids opening at the presence of you,
in the absence of this winter morning
